The best part of the art of living is to know how to grow old gracefully. Many of us think that we get old because we do not have a choice. But we do. We are all going to get there eventually. The question is how we get there. We could by being overly cautious and preventing ourselves from living our lives in the process, or be careful but still live our lives the way we want to.
When you look back in time, you need to see yourself in the life that you have led. While the people around you define the life you have led, there should be a lot of you in it. The best way to do this is to make a list of everything you love doing and to do it wholeheartedly. Responsibilities are a big part of our lives. In the process, we should not forget our responsibility towards ourselves. We owe it to us to make ourselves happy.
Let’s take a look at how we can welcome old age with grace and joy.
You do not stop laughing when you grow old. You become old when you stop laughing.
With old age comes the automatic seriousness in most of us. Life revolves around health issues and mundane activities. It is time to realize that it is not so. Health issues come and go. The emotions in us come from the way we live our lives, that is, doing what we love. It is the best way to prepare for what’s coming tomorrow. A healthy mind brings an active body. Watch your favorite shows. Work on your hobbies. Meet people of similar interests. Live your life your way.
It’s not how old you are. It is how you are old.
A lot of people associate age with what is to be done. Cycling? No, I am too old for it. Swimming? No, I will be made fun of. New recipe? Why does someone of my age want to try an exotic meal? Thoughts like these make you old. On the other hand, if you did not confuse generation with activities, you would live a free and complete life. We should do what we want, and not what society tells us we should do.
A joyful spirit is always young.
As you get old, you realize that there are no answers, just stories. The stories would be of the lives you have led, not witnessed. The places you visited. The people you met. The activities you did. That’s the crux of the story. And no one told you that the story writing stops. It does not. Keep writing to them. Bring in more exciting chapters. At no point would you want to feel that you have done everything and that’s all there is to it. You would be surprised if you opened your mind to new avenues.
Old age is just a record of one’s whole life
When you look back, you will count your age by the memories that you have created. Not by the number of years. And no one said that the making of these memories stops after a point in time. The beauty of growing old is that every day counts. Every act adds to the memory bank. Every emotion brings value to the life you have led. Create more experiences in this life. Take a trip with your friends. It could be a temple. It could be a beach resort. What you pick will define your memories.
Age is a matter of feeling, not years
A lot of weight is put in things that might not last in life. What would is how you feel at the end of the day. While duties and responsibilities make us who we are, it is the emotions that make us stronger. By experiencing life, we bring in wisdom and growth that textbooks do not.
Age is not lost youth but a new stage of opportunity and strength
Not all of us may have had the chance to try out new things in life. It could be due to various reasons we are not going to go into now. The point is that we are all still here and we still have the chance to live our lives the way we want. Being older tells us to be stronger in ways we have never thought of before — the courage to still do what we wish to without holding back.
Let us never know what old age is. Let us see the happiness that time brings. Not count the years. Spend the rest of your lives laughing. As often as it is said, laughter is the best medicine of them all. Age well. Age living life your way. It is still your day.
